A Prime number is any whole number that is divisible only by 1 and itself.  

Here is a quick and simple way to find prime numbers by hand.

Sieve of Eratosthenes

Start with a grid of numbers:

We know 1 is a prime so we can start so lets mark it off.

The next free number is prime so lets mark it, also since 2 is prime no other multiple of 2 can be prime so we need to exclude them.

3 is our next free number so it must be prime. Wow, we have found 3 prime numbers and haven’t used any math yet! Now lets mark off all the multiples of 3.

By now I hope you start to see the pattern that is forming here. 5 is our next free number so it is prime, lets mark it and remove all the numbers divisible by 5.

I think we will stop here. Working with one grid makes this simple and quick, cutting and pasting is getting to be tiresome.

So lets look at the prime numbers we have found so far. 1,2,3,5,7,11,13,17,19. Not to shabby! How big of a grid can you do by hand? Give it a try.
